It is synthesized and expressed to varying degrees in several organs and neoplasms. Its presence has been reported in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, endocrine organs, cardiovascular system, kidney and central nervous system. Ghrelin producing cells can be demonstrated in the stomach, intestines, pancreas, kidneys, brain, and pituitary. The present review summarizes findings regarding the function and regulation of ghrelin in different organs and in various diseases.
